Constitution of the G-SA
(Gay-Straight Alliance)
Wake Forest University
PREAMBLE
The Gay-Straight
Alliance has two main purposes on the Wake Forest campus. First, it
strives to promote understanding of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender
(GLBT) issues and acceptance of the GLBT community through campus and
community activities. Second, it exists to create a supportive atmosphere
on campus for members of the GLBT community and their allies.
ARTICLE
I: NAME
The name
of the organization shall be "G-SA," which is an acronym for
Gay-Straight Alliance. This name is not derived from or affiliated with
a national organization, but is unique to Wake Forest University.
ARTICLE
II: MEMBERSHIP
Section
1: Membership is open to undergraduates, graduate students, alumni,
and faculty and staff of Wake Forest University. G-SA will not discriminate
on the basis of gender, race, creed, religion, nationality, or sexual
orientation.
Section
2: Given the nature of the organization, there shall exist no formal
list of members or conditions of membership other than those stated
above.
Section
3: Those eligible to vote (members or membership) shall be defined
as those individuals who have attended at least two previous G-SA
meetings or activities. Those present at any meeting where voting
may take place will be asked to consider the University Honor Code
in this matter before voting occurs.
ARTICLE
III: OFFICERS
Section
1: The officers of G-SA shall be the Executive Chair, Secretary, Treasurer,
Publicity Chair, Social Chair, and Communications Coordinator, and
shall be collectively known as the Executive Board.
Section
2: All officers voted on for the proceeding school year shall take
office as of May 1st in the year they were elected.
Section
3: The Executive Chair shall preside at all meetings of the entire
organization. S/he shall work with the Executive Board to create yearly
goals for the organization, guarantee that the Executive Board meets
on a regular basis, and ensure that there exists an agenda for each
G-SA meeting. S/he shall also represent G-SA, along with the Treasurer
to the Student Budget and Appropriations Committee (SBAC).
Section
4: The Secretary shall be responsible for keeping minutes of the meetings,
maintaining the listserv, running the meetings in the absence of the
Executive Chair, the upkeep of the campus Post Office box, creation
of a newsletter, and arranging for rooms for meetings of the organization.
Section
5: The Treasurer shall receive and be responsible for the organization's
finances, have the power to sign checks and report the organization's
financial standing to the membership at least once per semester. S/he
will also write the next year's proposed budget and represent the
group, along with the Executive Chair, to the Student Budget and Appropriations
Committee (SBAC).
Section
6: The Publicity Chair shall be responsible for presiding over a Publicity
Committee, creation and duplication of signs advertising meetings
and other special events, and maintenance and upkeep of the website.
Section
7: The Social Chair shall be responsible for presiding over a Social
Committee and planning G-SA events, as well as campus-inclusive events.
Section
8: The Communications Coordinator shall be responsible for any correspondence
with other organizations on campus, as well as similar organizations
at other colleges and universities. S/he will also be the main contact
to the campus newspaper, and shall be the initiate and recipient of
any public relations materials. S/he will also be the liaison to the
University administration.
Section
9: Officers may be removed by a two-thirds vote of the members. The
officer in question shall be notified of this vote at least three
weeks beforehand, and shall have ample opportunity to defend him/herself
to the membership before the vote is taken.
ARTICLE
IV: FACULTY ADVISOR
Section
1: Nominations for faculty advisor to G-SA should be made by the membership
and approved by a two-thirds vote of the membership.
Section
2: The Executive Board should meet at least twice a semester with
the faculty advisor in order to keep him/her informed of the organization's
plans and activities.
ARTICLE
V: MEETINGS
Section
1: The Executive Board of G-SA should meet at least once every two
weeks.
Section
2: Open meetings of the general membership (for business, discussions,
speakers, activities, etc.) should be held at least three times each
semester.

VI: FINANCES
Section
1: The collection of dues is not a condition of participating in any
G-SA activities.
Section
2: If some individual activities require payment by members, the Treasurer
shall have responsibility for collecting these fees.
Section
3: Other finances, such as donations and monies from fund-raisers,
shall come under the responsibility of the Treasurer.
Section
4: The budget, as presented by the Treasurer, must be approved by
two-thirds of those members present and voting.
ARTICLE
VII: AMENDMENTS
Section
1: The listserv subscribers should be notified at least one week before
meeting to vote on a proposed amendment.
Section
2: A two-thirds vote of those present and voting at this meeting will
be necessary for passage, as well as the approval of the Student Life
Committee.
Section
3: The latest date of revision shall be included in the Constitution.
ARTICLE
VIII: RATIFICATION
This constitution shall require approval of at least two-thirds of the
membership, approval of the Student Government, approval of the Student
Life Committee, and recognition by the undergraduate faculties of Wake
Forest University.
BY-LAWS

- RULES
OF ORDER. Robert's Rules of Order shall have precedence over any other
parliamentary procedure when invoked by the Executive Chair.
- AMENDMENT.
These by-laws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of those members
present and voting. The membership should be notified by listserv
at least one week before meeting to vote on a proposed amendment.
The Student Life Committee must approve amendments. The date of the
latest revision will be included in the by-laws.
- ELECTION
OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD. Any undergraduate or graduate student member
of G-SA shall be eligible to hold the office of Executive Chair. At
least two weeks notice shall be given for an election. Election of
the Executive Chair for the following school year shall take place
in April of each year. Nominations shall be made from the floor. Votes
shall be cast by secret ballot; that candidate receiving a majority
of the votes wins. A majority will be more than one-half of the number
of those present and voting. Other officers shall be elected in the
same manner.
