(Gay-Straight Alliance)
Wake Forest University

PREAMBLE

The Gay-Straight Alliance has two main purposes on the Wake Forest campus. First, it strives to promote understanding of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) issues and acceptance of the GLBT community through campus and community activities. Second, it exists to create a supportive atmosphere on campus for members of the GLBT community and their allies.

ARTICLE I: NAME

The name of the organization shall be "G-SA," which is an acronym for Gay-Straight Alliance. This name is not derived from or affiliated with a national organization, but is unique to Wake Forest University.

ARTICLE II: MEMBERSHIP

Section 1: Membership is open to undergraduates, graduate students, alumni, and faculty and staff of Wake Forest University. G-SA will not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, creed, religion, nationality, or sexual orientation.

Section 2: Given the nature of the organization, there shall exist no formal list of members or conditions of membership other than those stated above.

Section 3: Those eligible to vote (members or membership) shall be defined as those individuals who have attended at least two previous G-SA meetings or activities. Those present at any meeting where voting may take place will be asked to consider the University Honor Code in this matter before voting occurs.

ARTICLE III: OFFICERS

Section 1: The officers of G-SA shall be the Executive Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity Chair, Social Chair, and Communications Coordinator, and shall be collectively known as the Executive Board.

Section 2: All officers voted on for the proceeding school year shall take office as of May 1st in the year they were elected.

Section 3: The Executive Chair shall preside at all meetings of the entire organization. S/he shall work with the Executive Board to create yearly goals for the organization, guarantee that the Executive Board meets on a regular basis, and ensure that there exists an agenda for each G-SA meeting. S/he shall also represent G-SA, along with the Treasurer to the Student Budget and Appropriations Committee (SBAC).

Section 4: The Secretary shall be responsible for keeping minutes of the meetings, maintaining the listserv, running the meetings in the absence of the Executive Chair, the upkeep of the campus Post Office box, creation of a newsletter, and arranging for rooms for meetings of the organization.

Section 5: The Treasurer shall receive and be responsible for the organization's finances, have the power to sign checks and report the organization's financial standing to the membership at least once per semester. S/he will also write the next year's proposed budget and represent the group, along with the Executive Chair, to the Student Budget and Appropriations Committee (SBAC).

Section 6: The Publicity Chair shall be responsible for presiding over a Publicity Committee, creation and duplication of signs advertising meetings and other special events, and maintenance and upkeep of the website.

Section 7: The Social Chair shall be responsible for presiding over a Social Committee and planning G-SA events, as well as campus-inclusive events.

Section 8: The Communications Coordinator shall be responsible for any correspondence with other organizations on campus, as well as similar organizations at other colleges and universities. S/he will also be the main contact to the campus newspaper, and shall be the initiate and recipient of any public relations materials. S/he will also be the liaison to the University administration.

Section 9: Officers may be removed by a two-thirds vote of the members. The officer in question shall be notified of this vote at least three weeks beforehand, and shall have ample opportunity to defend him/herself to the membership before the vote is taken.

ARTICLE IV: FACULTY ADVISOR

Section 1: Nominations for faculty advisor to G-SA should be made by the membership and approved by a two-thirds vote of the membership.

Section 1: The Executive Board of G-SA should meet at least once every two weeks.

Section 2: Open meetings of the general membership (for business, discussions, speakers, activities, etc.) should be held at least three times each semester.

ARTICLE VI: FINANCES

Section 1: The collection of dues is not a condition of participating in any G-SA activities.

Section 2: If some individual activities require payment by members, the Treasurer shall have responsibility for collecting these fees.

Section 3: Other finances, such as donations and monies from fund-raisers, shall come under the responsibility of the Treasurer.

Section 4: The budget, as presented by the Treasurer, must be approved by two-thirds of those members present and voting.

ARTICLE VII: AMENDMENTS
